Letter from the President

On behalf of the members of the Senate of College Councils, welcome to our new and improved Web site. Created with the help of UT’s Office of Public Affairs, this site allows you to explore—with ease—everything the Senate has to offer the University of Texas at Austin community.

Officially sponsored by the University’s Provost and Vice President for Student Affairs, Senate represents the students of UT Austin in academic affairs by relaying the collective opinion of the 18 student councils of the various colleges and schools to University administrators. Whether through our councils, at-large members, executive board members, internal committee system, agencies or University-wide appointments, Senate has a hand in nearly every academic endeavor on campus.

In recent years, Senate institutionalized student input regarding tuition proposals, led the effort to create and implement the UT Honor Code, established scholarships for undergraduate research, and assisted in reforming UT’s undergraduate curriculum.

This year, Senate members have proactively worked to promote undergraduate research opportunities with the creation of an undergraduate research scholarship and UT’s first ever Research Week. We have advocated for the inclusion of certificate programs and minors on academic transcripts, created a student advisory board for study abroad programs, and continue to provide assistance to college deans in conducting the capital campaign. Senate has also been the leading voice for students in the discussion on UT’s new plus/minus grading system.

I encourage you to explore this Web site and learn as much as possible about the Senate of College Councils. Check-out our annual programs and events such as IntegrityUT Week, Longhorn School Bus, and Faculty Appreciation Week, read about the Analecta Literary Journal, the Undergraduate Research Journal and the other ways in which Senate contributes to the intellectual and educational mission of the University, take advantage of the financial assistance Senate provides to student organizations, meet the student leaders of the 18 college councils and see what they are doing to represent the students in their respective colleges and schools, or learn how you can get involved with Senate and with your college council. But most of all, discover the many things that Senate can do for you, for your organization, and for the University of Texas at Austin.

In the Senate of College Councils, our business is academic affairs; this Web site is just one of the ways that we hope to engage you in the academic life of our campus. Enjoy!

Leadership, Learning & Discovery…it starts here.
