Cockrell School of Engineering CTBAC

The Cockrell School of Engineering College Tuition and Budget Advisory Committee enhances the budget-setting process by creating a more transparent and inclusive environment for student decision making.

The Student Engineering Council has created a College Tuition and Budget Advisory Committee within the Cockrell School of Engineering. The CTBAC will be comprised of a group of students whose role will be to represent engineering students on the University of Texas campus by gathering information and commenting on tuition budget priorities.

The CTBAC will identify student priorities for the Cockrell School of Engineering, recommend changes in tuition and offer advice on the budget. The CTBAC within the Cockrell School of Engineering will function in a similar manner to the TPAC process, as the committee will make written recommendations to the Dean.

Students, faculty, or staff may email questions and input to ctbac@sec.engr.utexas.edu.

Purpose

The CTBAC serves various purposes within the Cockrell School of Engineering. The primary functions of the CTBAC include, but are not limited to:

  1. discuss college-level academic priorities
  2. recommend tuition increases as are necessary to meet the college-level academic priorities
  3. consider the allocation of budget resources within the college necessary to achieve the college-level academic priorities
  4. solicit feedback from students, faculty, and staff
  5. work with other CTBACs to collect input from members of the university community about university-wide budgetary recommendations and changes

Recommendations

Memorandum to Provost Steven Leslie from the Cockrell School of Engineering CTBAC endorsing Dean Gregory Fenves’ tuition proposal

Financial briefing on the Cockrell School of Engineering from Dean Gregory Fenves during the CTBAC’s student forum

Memorandum expresses the CTBAC’s support of a tuition increase in the Cockrell School of Engineering for the 2012-14 biennium in order for the school to remain competitive among its peer engineering institutions and improve four-year graduation rates. The memorandum also states that “students believe that if tuition is not increased, the Cockrell School of Engineering will be unable to hire faculty and teaching assistants who are fundamental to student success towards graduation ” and that the “consensus among students is that the hiring of more faculty will improve the quality of education and allow the school to offer more engineering courses.”
